PCSO funding cuts!?!

Avon and Somerset Police is to lose a third of its Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) according to the Home Office. The number of PCSOs across the Constabulary is to be reduced from 541 to 346.

We are appalled to hear that the funding for a third of the PCSOs has been withdrawn by the Labour government. We have always supported the PCSO scheme as a way of helping the Police engage with the local community.

PCSOs have been at work in Bath for a few months now and the benefits are already being felt. I am afraid that this decision will put our PCSOs at risk in the future. By taking this decision the Labour government is putting pressure on local authorities to come up with extra money to continue the scheme – Labour have gone back on their promises again.

What do you think of Bath and North East Somerset’s green spaces?

How far should people be expected to travel to get to their nearest park? What do you think green areas should be used for? These are just some of the questions being put to local people by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

The Council has been reviewing green space provision across the district to ensure that supply and quality matches the needs of the community.

Individuals and groups have been consulted to find out about their use and expectations of different types of green areas, including parks and gardens, spaces for less formal activities, recreation grounds, natural areas (woodland, natural and semi-natural areas), allotments and spaces designed for children and young people.

Having completed a comprehensive assessment and audit of these types of green spaces, the Council has now drafted a Green Space Strategy for further consultation with the local community.

The Strategy will assist Bath & North East Somerset Council in protecting existing green space from development and identifying where the supply or quality of green space is low, so that resources and funding bids can be concentrated into these areas.

A key part of the Green Space Strategy is the creation of minimum standards for green space provision that will be applied across Bath & North East Somerset.

Public consultation on the proposed Green Space Strategy finishes on Friday, 22 December.

During this time, the consultation documents and details on how to make a response will be available at: Trimbridge House, Bath; Riverside, Keynsham and The Hollies in Midsomer Norton, as well as Bath Central, Saltford and Radstock Libraries, and on the council website.

Get online and be part of the Rec review

Views from residents, community groups, interested parties and members of the public are being gathered as part of a strategic review into the future use of the Rec in Bath city centre.

The Rec is managed by the Recreation Ground Trust - a Charitable Trust, which includes three Bath & North East Somerset Councillors as Trustees. The Rec has many community uses and is best known for being the home of Bath Rugby Club.

The strategic review is being conducted by an independent consultant, Jeff Bishop of BDOR, and will include lots of opportunities for people to have their say.

As part of this review, a new website aimed at providing information about the strategic review, the Trust and the Rec itself has been launched.

The website will play an important role in the consultation process and will include a questionnaire.

The questionnaire is now live on the website. It offers some options or choices for possible outcomes to the future of the Rec. It asks people to comment on these so that opinions can be gauged. The questionnaire will be online for six weeks, to allow people time to complete and return it.

The website is for and about the community - local people are encouraged to contribute to and interact with the site by providing ideas, stories, reviews and pictures.
